I’m going to tell you up front: I’m a geek and proud to say it! When I say geek, I mean that I love Renaissance Faires, Fantasy Literature, tabletop and all kinds of video games. A lot of people would even call me a “gamer”. There’s something magical about playing pretend, particularly with other creative adults, which strikes a chord in my heart.
And yet something has always bothered me – how us “geeks” are portrayed by mainstream media, how difficult it is to describe what we do (from SCA to RenFaire to LARP) to those people that don’t share our hobbies, and most especially how people tend to assume that my friends and I must be wackos living in our parents’ basements once they find out how we spend our weekends.
Because as you and I know – we may be a little weird, but we’re a whole lot of fun!
So this year, I’ve decided to put my money where my heart is and create a new product that will begin to change the image of our community from “a bunch of 40 year old freaks running around in the woods avoiding real life” to something more realistic: interesting people that have kept the spirit of youth and enjoy playing pretend while acknowledging both the past that has brought us here, and the magic and mystery of the stories that captured our hearts in the first place.
The product is a High Fantasy Pin-Up Calendar called “The REAL Girls of Gaming”. The calendar will be filled with tasteful (but sexy!) photos of beautiful women that actually game, attend Faires and are active members of our community. This is not another fake gamer product with professional models that have never tossed dice or bought garb in their lives.
So check it out, buy a copy, or ask me about how to re-sell them on your website or at your store/booth!
